We are a friendly community choir initially set up to welcome anyone from the local area with no joining conditions, no auditions, and no experience required. Our aim is to simply have fun when we meet to sing together and to learn about music and singing techniques as we go along. We try to do a number of concerts each year, sometimes with other groups, sometimes outdoors and usually raising money for local charities.
The choir was an idea put forward by Trudy Dean and a trial was set up in February 2012 for six weeks to see if people would be interested and if anyone would turn up. The response was amazing with around 70 people at the first rehearsal and the six weeks were enjoyed so much by those taking part that everyone voted to carry on and make the choir a permanent fixture.
We were initially led by Music Director, Jeffrey Vaughan Martin, who took the choir from its start in 2012 and was a huge part in building the choir into an established and respected musical group. Sadly Jeffrey Vaughan Martin died in April 2016 and for the rest of that year the mantle was taken over by Rupert Bond. We are now led by our new Musical Director, Kathryn Ridgeway who began rehearsals with us in January 2017.
The choir is a community choir and this means that we are completely inclusive and consist of a huge range of people from complete beginners and people who have never sung in a group before to people who have sung all their lives or taken part in other musical ventures. All ages are represented and many of our members enjoy the social aspect of the choir, meeting up with other local people as much as the singing! We have around 120 people signed-up for the choir and on a regular basis there are around 60-100 people at each meeting.
The choir took part in their first concert on Saturday 24th March 2012 when they sang in St. Mary’s Church in West Malling in support of The Maidstone Singers. Since then they have sung in a number of their own concerts along with the West Malling Christmas Festivals helping to turn on the Christmas lights and charity events such as the open air Summer Festival at Spadeworks in Offham. Recently they sang in a thanksgiving service in Rochester Cathedral and also with the world famous Stile Antico choir as part of the Music@Malling Music Festival. In December 2016 we sang in the Demelza House Christmas Concert in Canterbury Cathedral which was simply magical! In 2017 we are going to be making our debut in London. We are thoroughly enjoying each challenge and experience, preparing and performing publicly and the choir has received some very nice comments from their audiences.
We currently run a waiting list for new members so please email us to go on to the list or for more information about the choir please email us at email@example.com The waiting list is reviewed at regular intervals so please don’t let it put you off!
